WHAT A PLACE CAN AND CANNOT DO TO A CHART
Your birth chart does not change when you move. The planets stay exactly where they were the moment you were born in Pretoria: Sun at 5° Cancer, Moon at 8° Virgo, Saturn opposing Neptune to within a third of a degree. What relocation astrology does is rotate that fixed chart to a new horizon. The Ascendant and Midheaven get recalculated for the new latitude and longitude, the houses shift with them, and planets that were tucked away at birth can land on an angle, while planets that were on an angle can slide off one.
In this model, that is the entire mechanism. A place does not make you someone else. It turns the volume up on some parts of the chart and down on others. That is a real thing to know about a city, and it is also a limited thing. It says nothing about rent, visas, weather, whether your people are there, or why you are considering the move in the first place. Those weigh more, and this reading will say so again at the end.
What follows describes what each of these three places tends to amplify and what it would ask of you. None of it is a verdict, and none of it is a prediction.
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
Los Angeles is the busiest of the three charts by a wide margin. Five planets sit within orb of an angle, and the two tightest are the two ends of the tightest aspect you were born with.
Start there. Natally, Saturn at 1°07′ Gemini opposes Neptune at 0°49′ Sagittarius with an orb of 0.31° — the closest aspect in your chart. At birth that opposition ran between the 11th house (community, friends, networks, hopes) and the 5th (creativity, romance, play). In Los Angeles the relocated Midheaven lands at 2°01′ Sagittarius, which puts Neptune on the Midheaven at 1.2° and Saturn on the IC at 0.89°. Your tightest natal tension becomes the vertical spine of the chart: Neptune at the top, where public role and reputation live, Saturn at the bottom, where home, roots and private life live. (The house table lists Saturn in the 3rd and Neptune in the 9th because each falls about a degree on the near side of its cusp; at that distance from the angle both are read as angular.)
Read through their natal condition, this is what it tends to mean. Neptune in Sagittarius, retrograde, conjunct Jupiter at 3.17° — the public-facing part of the chart here tends to be about vision, belief, scale and the not-yet-real. Jupiter at 27°39′ Scorpio also reaches the Midheaven at 4.37°, and Jupiter is sextile Pluto at 0.55°, so the expansion has a deep, investigative, all-in quality rather than a light one. What you would be known for in this place tends to be large and hard to pin down. Saturn in Gemini on the IC is the counterweight: the private base tends to ask for structure, fact, discipline and limits. Home becomes the place where the accounting happens. Because the two planets are in exact opposition, the pull runs both ways — the more diffuse and expansive the public face becomes, the more the private foundation tends to demand solid ground. This place would ask you to hold both ends deliberately. It is the loudest thing in any of the three charts, and loud is not the same as easy.
Now the horizon. The relocated Ascendant is 16°20′ Aquarius, not the Cancer you were born with. That changes what you lead with: Cancer rising tends to lead with feeling, protection and the indirect approach; Aquarius rising tends to lead with the idea, the system, a degree of detachment and the unconventional angle. Two bodies sit on that Ascendant — the True Node at 15°07′ Aquarius, 1.22° from it, and Mars at 20°54′ Aquarius, 4.58° from it.
Mars is the more physical of the two. It moves from your natal 8th house (intimacy, shared resources, deep change) to the 1st — self, body, first impressions. Natally Mars is tightly wired: biquintile Pluto at 0.19°, sesquiquadrate the Sun at 0.02°, trine Venus at 1.51°. Bringing that Mars to the Ascendant tends to put the drive out front — initiative first, deliberation second. The Sun–Mars sesquiquadrate at 0.02° matters here, because the Sun itself relocates to the 5th house in Los Angeles. So the friction between who you are and what you push for stops being a private matter, as it is with the Sun in the natal 12th, and becomes something played out between a visible creative life and a visible drive. The Node on the Ascendant, in this framework, marks a direction of growth sitting right on the point of contact with the place; natally it lives in the 7th house of partnership and is sextile Chiron at 1.42°, so the growth direction here tends to involve meeting the place directly rather than through others.
The house shifts back this up. The Sun goes from the 12th to the 5th; Mercury goes from the 1st to the 5th. At birth Mercury sat on your Ascendant at 0.57° — it was the loudest planet you had, the voice on the horizon. In Los Angeles it leaves the horizon entirely and joins the Sun in the 5th: creativity, play, romance, children, self-expression. That tends to amplify visible creative output and pull the mind toward making things rather than presenting yourself. Mercury's natal square to Chiron at 0.37° comes with it, so the making is not carefree — there is a sore point in how you think and speak that tends to show up in the work.
The other loud shift is into the 7th house. The Moon moves from the 2nd (money, resources, self-worth) to the 7th (partnership, close one-on-one relationships), and Pluto moves from the 3rd to the 7th as well. The Moon rules your birth chart, since your natal Rising is Cancer, so wherever the Moon goes the chart's emotional center of gravity tends to follow. In Los Angeles it lands in partnership, alongside the same Pluto that is sextile Jupiter and biquintile Mars. That combination tends to make close relationships here intense, consequential and not remotely casual. Emotional footing would tend to come through a partner rather than through security or money, and Pluto in the same house tends to bring questions of control, depth and permanence into the same room. Uranus moving from the 3rd to the 8th adds instability to shared finances and intimacy. This is a demanding relational setup, and it is one of the things the place would ask of you.
The astrocartography lines confirm the angular reading rather than adding to it: the Saturn IC line runs about 48 km west of the city and the Neptune MC line about 81 km west — both effectively on top of Los Angeles. The Jupiter MC line is about 399 km west. The Mars ASC line is about 711 km to the east, which is why Mars is within orb of the Ascendant but not exact.
Local space adds nothing. Los Angeles lies 16,665 km northwest of Pretoria on a bearing of 294.05°, and no planetary compass line from your birthplace runs within 6° of that direction.
One paran does reach the city. Moon MC × Jupiter ASC is exact at latitude 34.5584°, about 56 km north of Los Angeles — inside a degree, so it counts. It pairs the Moon culminating with Jupiter rising: your emotional need for a public position (the Moon, chart ruler, here in the 7th) and Jupiter's expansive arrival (Scorpio, conjunct Neptune, sextile Pluto) tend to come forward in the same moment. Two more parans sit outside orb — Mercury IC × Pluto DSC about 151 km north, and Venus DSC × Pluto MC about 161 km south. Those are approaching, not active, and belong in the background.
AUSTIN, TEXAS, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
Austin is the quietest of the three charts, and that quiet is itself the finding.
The relocated Ascendant is 16°06′ Pisces. Like your birth Rising it is a water sign, so leading with feeling stays — but Pisces tends to lead with permeability and receptivity rather than Cancer's protective shell. What you lead with here tends to be softer, less defended, more responsive to whatever is in the room. Nothing sits on that Ascendant. The nearest rising line, Mars ASC, is about 1,219 km to the northwest.
Two planets are angular. The tight one is Venus at 19°24′ Gemini on the IC, orb 1.8° (the house table places it just on the 3rd-house side of the cusp, the same technicality as Saturn in Los Angeles). Natally Venus lives in your 12th house — solitude, the unconscious, retreat — which tends to mean that what you value and how you connect is private, tucked away, not always visible even to you. Venus in Gemini connects through words, curiosity and variety; it is trine Mars at 1.51°, so desire and action tend to cooperate rather than fight. In Austin that hidden Venus lands on the base of the chart. It tends to move connection, ease and pleasure out of the unconscious and into the home — the private life becomes where warmth actually happens, where conversation is the currency and where the Venus–Mars trine gets to operate. The Venus IC line runs about 183 km west of the city, which fits.
The wide one is the Moon on the Descendant at 7.86°. That is inside the 8° rule but only just, and it should be read as a lean, not a headline. The Moon moves from the 2nd house to the 6th — work, health, daily routine, service — and the Moon in Virgo in the 6th tends to find emotional footing through order, usefulness and the body maintained. Its drift toward the Descendant suggests that need being partly met through a partner, but at nearly 8° that is faint. The Moon DSC line is about 704 km west.
The loud shifts in Austin all point inward. The Sun moves from the 12th to the 4th — home, roots, family, private life. Mercury moves from the 1st to the 4th. So the pair that sat on your Ascendant at birth, the front-facing Mercury and Sun, both relocate into the most private house in the chart. Identity tends to center on the household; the mind turns toward family, domestic matters and what is close. Mars goes from the natal 8th to the 12th, which tends to push the drive underground — it operates behind the scenes, in solitude, or becomes harder to reach directly. Put those together: Sun in the 4th, Mercury in the 4th, Mars in the 12th, Venus on the IC. In this framework Austin is the chart turned toward its interior. The Sun–Mars sesquiquadrate at 0.02° does not go away, but with both planets in private houses the friction between will and drive tends to be worked out where no one is watching. Whether that is restorative or stifling depends on what you want from a move; a chart born with Mercury on the horizon could go either way with it.
The 7th house picks up two heavy planets. Pluto moves from the 3rd to the 7th, as it does in Los Angeles, and Uranus moves from the 3rd to the 7th, which is unique to Austin. Partnership here tends to carry Pluto's intensity and Uranus's need for independence and sudden change at once — a combination that asks close relationships to be simultaneously deep and free, which is not a small ask.
Jupiter and Neptune both move from the 5th to the 9th (travel, higher study, meaning, the foreign), and Saturn moves from the 11th to the 3rd — shared with Los Angeles and read the same way: the Jupiter–Neptune conjunction tends to amplify the pull toward big ideas and belief systems, while Saturn in the 3rd tends to make communication and the local environment something you approach with discipline.
The remaining lines are distant. Sun IC about 1,536 km east, Uranus DSC about 1,590 km east, Saturn IC about 2,019 km west, Neptune MC about 2,054 km west, Pluto DSC about 2,146 km east. Austin sits in a comparatively empty stretch of the map.
At the finer scales, nothing reaches it. Austin lies 14,730 km west of Pretoria on a bearing of 288.49°, with no local space line within 6°. There is no paran latitude within 1.5° of the city. That is a plain result: the techniques that resolve at short distances have nothing to say about Austin. What the chart has to say about it is carried entirely by the Venus IC and the inward house pattern.
TORONTO, ONTARIO, CANADA
Toronto reverses your birth horizon.
At birth, Mercury sat on your Ascendant at 0.57° and the Sun at 7.6°. In Toronto the relocated Midheaven is 8°04′ Capricorn, which puts the IC at 8°04′ Cancer — and the Sun at 5°53′ Cancer lands on it at 2.18°, with Mercury at 14°04′ Cancer following at 6.0°. The two bodies that defined how you met the world at birth move to the base of the chart: home, roots, private life, where you go to ground. (The house table puts the Sun just on the 3rd-house side of the cusp and Mercury in the 4th.)
Read through natal condition: the Sun in Cancer on the IC tends to center identity on building a base — a household, a private world, a place to return to. At birth this was a 12th-house Sun, hidden and retreating; on the IC it is still private, but anchored rather than dissolved. Mercury in Cancer near the IC tends to turn the mind toward family, memory and what is close. And Mercury's tight natal square to Chiron at 0.37° matters enormously here, because Chiron is on the other angle.
The relocated Ascendant is 16°09′ Aries, and Chiron at 13°42′ Aries sits 2.46° from it. Aries rising is the opposite mode from your Cancer birth Rising: it tends to lead with directness, initiative and the first move, without much of a shell. Chiron on that Ascendant tends to put your most tender point right at the point of contact with the place. Natally Chiron lives in the 9th house — travel, higher study, meaning, the foreign — and is sextile the True Node at 1.42° and biquintile the Moon at 0.55°. So the sensitivity that comes forward in Toronto has to do with being from elsewhere, with meaning and belief, and with asserting yourself as an outsider. Because Mercury squares Chiron at a third of a degree, and Mercury is near the IC while Chiron is on the Ascendant, the natal square becomes an angular square. In this framework that tends to mean the tension between how you think and speak and where you feel most exposed gets pulled into the open — talked about rather than talked around. That is demanding, and it is specific to this place.
Uranus at 9°29′ Libra is on the Descendant at 6.67° — wide, so a lean. Uranus moves from the 3rd house to the 6th (work, health, daily routine, service). Daily work tends to be changeable and disruptive here, and the drift toward the Descendant suggests the connections that come forward tend to carry Uranus's flavor of independence and abrupt shifts. The Uranus DSC line is about 224 km west, and the Sun IC line about 190 km west, so both readings are supported by nearby lines.
Three further house shifts are loud. Mars moves from the natal 8th to the 11th — community, friends, networks, hopes. The drive goes into the group. With the Sun on the IC, the Sun–Mars sesquiquadrate at 0.02° tends to play out as tension between the base you are building and the network you are pushing into — home versus the wider circle.
Saturn moves from the 11th to the 2nd (money, resources, self-worth), and Neptune moves from the 5th to the 8th (intimacy, shared resources, deep change). That is your tightest natal aspect, the 0.31° Saturn–Neptune opposition, landing on the 2nd–8th axis: your own resources under Saturn's structure and restriction, shared resources under Neptune's dissolution and uncertainty. Jupiter joins Neptune in the 8th, bringing the Jupiter–Pluto sextile with it. In this model the money axis in Toronto tends to be where the Saturn–Neptune tension lives — discipline on one side, something large and hard to see on the other. It is a different expression of the same opposition that runs vertically in Los Angeles, and no less demanding for being less visible.
Pluto moves from the 3rd to the 6th, joining Uranus there. Work, health and daily routine tend to carry Pluto's intensity — work as the domain where deep change happens, with Uranus keeping it unstable.
Other lines: Mercury IC about 539 km east, Pluto DSC about 820 km east, Mars ASC about 1,624 km northwest, Venus IC about 1,631 km west, Moon DSC about 1,785 km west, Jupiter DSC about 1,792 km northeast.
Local space, again, is silent: Toronto lies 13,317 km northwest of Pretoria on a bearing of 307.38°, with no compass line within 6°.
The parans are not silent. Toronto sits between two paran latitudes, both inside a degree. Venus ASC × Mars MC is exact at 44.1208°, about 52 km north of the city. Venus MC × Pluto ASC is exact at 43.1042°, about 61 km south. Both involve Venus — the Venus hidden in your natal 12th house. The first pairs Venus rising with Mars culminating: connection and ease arriving in the same moment as drive and public action, which is the natal Venus–Mars trine made angular by latitude. The second pairs Venus culminating with Pluto rising: what you are known for carrying Venus's flavor while what you lead with carries Pluto's — depth and intensity coming forward on contact, with Pluto's sextile to Jupiter and biquintile to Mars behind it. Notice that Venus reaches an angle in Austin by longitude (the IC) and reaches the angles in Toronto by latitude (two parans). Two different mechanisms, both pulling the same hidden planet forward.
What Toronto asks: to build a base with the Sun and Mercury on the IC while leading with an unguarded Aries front that has Chiron on it; to handle a Saturn–Neptune money axis; and to accept work that Pluto and Uranus tend to make intense and unstable.
THE THREE SIDE BY SIDE
Laid next to each other, these charts foreground different drives. This is a description of emphasis, not a ranking.
The vertical axis — what you are known for versus what holds you at the base. In Los Angeles it is the Saturn–Neptune opposition, exact to the degree: Neptune and Jupiter on the Midheaven, Saturn on the IC. Public vision against private structure. In Austin it is Venus on the IC at 1.8° with nothing on the Midheaven: private ease with no public counterweight. In Toronto it is the Sun and Mercury on the IC: identity and mind rooted at home, with the Capricorn Midheaven empty of planets.
The horizon — what you lead with and what comes toward you. Los Angeles: Aquarius rising with Mars and the North Node on it, drive-first and ideas-first. Austin: Pisces rising with nothing on it, receptive, the Moon leaning wide toward the Descendant. Toronto: Aries rising with Chiron on it, direct and exposed, Uranus leaning wide toward the Descendant.
Where the Sun sits. Los Angeles, the 5th: creative, visible. Austin, the 4th: domestic, private. Toronto, on the IC: rooted and local.
Where Mars sits. Los Angeles, the 1st: out front. Austin, the 12th: underground. Toronto, the 11th: in the network. Three different homes for the same tightly aspected planet, and the Sun–Mars sesquiquadrate reads differently in each — public in Los Angeles, private in Austin, split between home and circle in Toronto.
Where Pluto sits. Los Angeles and Austin, the 7th: intensity in partnership. Toronto, the 6th: intensity in work.
Where the Saturn–Neptune opposition falls. Los Angeles, the MC–IC axis. Austin, the 3rd–9th: communication against meaning. Toronto, the 2nd–8th: own money against shared money.
The finer scales. Los Angeles has one paran on it, Moon MC × Jupiter ASC, 56 km north. Austin has none within 1.5°. Toronto has two, Venus ASC × Mars MC 52 km north and Venus MC × Pluto ASC 61 km south. Bearings from Pretoria: Austin 288.49°, Los Angeles 294.05°, Toronto 307.38° — a spread of 18.89°, so these are genuinely different lines out from your birthplace, though no planetary compass line runs along any of them. Distances: Toronto 13,317 km, Austin 14,730 km, Los Angeles 16,665 km.
THE HONEST NOTE
This is not a case where the chart shrugs. Three different rising signs, three different sets of angular planets, three different placements for the Sun, for Mars, for the Saturn–Neptune axis. The relocated angles move far enough between these cities to change the reading substantially, and the contrasts above are real geometry.
Where the chart does not distinguish, honestly:
Local space is silent for all three. No compass line from Pretoria runs within 6° of any of these bearings. That technique has nothing to say here.
The Mars ASC line hovers at a distance from all three — about 711 km east of Los Angeles, 1,219 km northwest of Austin, 1,624 km northwest of Toronto — and reaches none of them. Only in Los Angeles does Mars get within angular orb, and there by zodiacal degree rather than by line.
Several placements are shared. Los Angeles and Austin both put Jupiter and Neptune in the 9th, Pluto in the 7th and Saturn in the 3rd. Austin and Toronto both put the Moon in the 6th. Those would tend to feel similar in either place.
Two of the angular contacts are wide and should not carry weight: the Moon on the Descendant in Austin at 7.86°, and Uranus on the Descendant in Toronto at 6.67°. The two Los Angeles parans outside orb — Mercury IC × Pluto DSC at 151 km and Venus DSC × Pluto MC at 161 km — are background only.
And one caution about the loudest finding. The Saturn–Neptune opposition on the Los Angeles meridian is the most exact, most specific thing in any of these three charts. Exact is not the same as favorable. That axis would ask more of you than anything in Austin or Toronto, and the chart cannot tell you whether you want that asked.
THE CHART IS ONE INPUT
Everything above is one lens on three cities, and it is not the deciding one. Whether your people are in one of these places, whether the work you actually do is there, what it costs to live, what the climate does to you, how far it is from the people you would want to be near, and — most of all — why you are considering each of these places at all: those are the questions that decide a move, and none of them appear in a relocated chart.
Use this the way you would use a description of a room's acoustics. It tells you what tends to get amplified when you speak there. It does not tell you whether to walk in. That part stays yours.
