WHAT A PLACE CAN AND CANNOT DO TO THIS CHART
Relocation astrology takes the chart you were born with in Coyoacán and rotates it to a new horizon. Nothing in the sky moves. Your Sun stays at 13°23′ Cancer, your Mars stays at 13°24′ Capricorn opposite it to within two arc-minutes, your Venus and Pluto stay fused in Gemini. What changes is the frame around them: which sign rises, which planet sits at the top of the chart, and which house, which department of life, each planet is filed under. In this model a place does not change who you are; it changes which parts of you get turned up.
That is a real effect and a modest one. It says nothing about rent, language, weather, who you would be leaving, or why you are even looking at these three cities. Those things weigh more than anything below, and I will say that once here rather than in every section.
Two facts up front. New York and Detroit share a frame: both put Virgo on the Ascendant and Gemini on the Midheaven, and the same paran runs between them, so they differ in degree rather than kind. Paris is a different rotation altogether. I will read what each one actually amplifies, then set them side by side without ranking them.
NEW YORK, NEW YORK, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
The loudest thing New York does to this chart is lift your Venus–Pluto conjunction onto the Midheaven. Pluto at 23°45′ Gemini sits 6.69° from the relocated MC at 17°04′ Gemini; Venus at 24°20′ Gemini sits 7.28° from it. Those are wide orbs, near the outer edge of the eight-degree window, so this is a pair standing just past the top of the chart rather than dead on it. The astrocartography lines say the same thing from the other side: your Pluto MC line runs about 642 km to the east, your Venus MC line about 667 km east. Close, not exact.
But these two are welded natally at 0.59°, the second-tightest aspect you have, so what gets pulled up to the public angle here is not "Venus" and "Pluto" as separate keywords. It is the specific thing they make together in your chart: Venus in Gemini, which tends to connect through words, exchange, curiosity and variety, bound to Pluto, which tends to make attachment total, investigative and unwilling to stay on the surface. At birth the pair straddled your 10th/11th cusp, Pluto in the 10th and Venus in the 11th, half in public work and half in the circle of friends. New York files both in the 10th and raises them to the meridian. In this framework, that tends to make what you are known for inseparable from what you love and what you cannot let go of.
Add the natal square from Venus to Saturn (3.11°). In New York, Saturn at 27°27′ Pisces moves from the 8th house into the 7th, partnership and the one-on-one, and sits roughly eight and a half degrees from the relocated Descendant at 18°51′ Pisces, just outside the angular window; its Descendant line runs 834 km east. So the square becomes something you would live along a visible axis: Venus–Pluto public at the top, Saturn in Pisces close to the partnership angle, asking for commitment, limits and a slower pace than Gemini prefers.
The relocated Ascendant is 18°51′ Virgo, replacing your birth Leo rising, and that is the headline for what you tend to lead with here. Leo rising leads with presence and warmth. Virgo rising leads with attention: noticing, sorting, refining, the craft under the performance. The ruler of the relocated chart becomes Mercury at 6°20′ Leo, which moves from your natal 12th house (solitude, the unconscious, retreat) into the 11th (community, friends, networks). In this model that is a quiet but real shift: the part of you that thinks and speaks, filed at birth behind the scenes, gets a room with other people in it.
The biggest house shift is the whole Cancer cluster moving from the 11th to the 10th. Sun at 13°23′, Neptune at 12°24′ conjunct it within a degree, Jupiter at 20°26′ conjunct the North Node (2.98°), and Venus from Gemini all relocate into career, public role and reputation, joining Pluto, which was already there. The Moon moves from the 10th to the 9th. At birth, your Moon at 29°42′ Taurus sat 6.53° from the Midheaven: the feeling body on the public angle. In New York it steps down into the 9th, travel, higher study, meaning and the foreign, and its MC line sits 1473 km to the west. So the Moon leaves the top of the chart and Venus–Pluto takes the spot. That is the single cleanest way to describe New York in this framework: the public face shifts from a Taurus Moon (steadiness, appetite, the body, sensory groundedness, sextile Saturn for durability) to Venus–Pluto in Gemini (magnetism, intensity, the unsayable said).
Local space adds nothing: New York lies 3370.1 km northeast of Coyoacán at bearing 39.69°, and no planet's compass line runs that way within 6°. The paran does reach it. Mars rising × Jupiter setting is exact at latitude 41.62°, which runs 100.8 km north of the city, inside one degree of latitude and therefore worth leaning on. Read through the chart: Mars in Capricorn, retrograde, opposed exactly by the Sun, comes over the horizon at the same moment Jupiter in Cancer, fused with the North Node, crosses the Descendant. In this model that pairs your drive and your generosity in one instant, how you assert yourself and what you draw toward you from others arriving together. It tends to amplify big moves and big returns, with the Sun–Mars opposition still underneath, so it can also feel like being pulled to do more than you want to become.
What New York asks: that you are willing to be known, really known, with Venus–Pluto standing at the top, and that you build a home sturdy enough to hold the Mars–Uranus charge. It foregrounds the public and the private at once and does not let either relax.
PARIS, FRANCE
Paris is the different chart, and the first honest thing to say is that no planet falls within 8° of any angle here. The nearest is the Moon: at 29°42′ Taurus it sits about fourteen and a half degrees from the relocated Descendant at 15°05′ Taurus, and its Descendant line runs 1054 km to the east. Everything Paris does, it does through the houses and through two parans that bracket the city.
The relocated Ascendant is 15°05′ Scorpio. The rulers of a Scorpio Ascendant are Pluto and Mars, and both go somewhere telling: Pluto from the 10th house into the 8th, Mars from the 5th into the 2nd. Where New York's Virgo ruler Mercury moved into the social 11th, Paris's rulers move into intimacy and shared resources (8th) and money, resources and self-worth (2nd). The posture Scorpio rising tends to bring forward is guardedness and depth, watching before revealing, and in this model the lead planets are filed in the houses of what is shared and what is owed.
The dominant house shift is the mass migration into the 8th. Sun, Neptune, Jupiter, Venus and Pluto, five planets from the 11th and 10th, all land in the 8th house: intimacy, shared resources, deep change. The Moon moves from the 10th into the 7th, partnership and marriage. The Moon that sat on your public angle at birth relocates into the one-on-one. A Taurus Moon in the 7th tends to want the relationship steady, physical and reliable, and its sextile to Saturn (2.26°) gives it a taste for commitments that last. The Moon DSC line at 1054 km east is the nearest line Paris has, but it is not on top of you; treat this as a 7th-house Moon, not an angular one.
Mars and Uranus move from the 5th to the 2nd. That puts the chart's exact Sun–Mars opposition on the 8th/2nd axis: what is mine against what is ours, self-worth against what is owed and shared. Mars–Uranus in the 2nd tends to make resources volatile, self-generated and unconventional, income that arrives in bursts and leaves the same way. That is a demanding placement, and I will only say that the pattern is worth knowing before you budget around a city.
Saturn moves from the 8th into the 4th. Saturn in Pisces, which lived in the shared-resources house at birth, relocates into home and roots; its IC line is 1922 km east, so this is a house placement rather than an angular one. Saturn in the 4th tends to make the home the place where limits, responsibility and solitude show up: a home that would have to be built slowly and that asks more than it gives at first. Mercury moves from the 12th into the 9th, so the thinking mind leaves the room behind the room and enters the foreign, the language, the study.
Now the parans, which is where Paris gets specific. Moon IC × Mercury DSC is exact at latitude 48.28°, just 64.4 km south of the city, the closest piece of exact geometry in any of the three places. The Moon touches the bottom of the chart (private ground, roots) at the same instant Mercury crosses the Descendant (the other person, the exchange). In this model your Moon, which was on the public angle at birth, is brought to the private angle in the same moment the mind meets someone else. The tendency it describes is private feeling and spoken exchange arriving together: it can look like a home built around conversation, and it can look like a private self that gets talked into being by whoever is across the table.
The second paran is Sun ASC × Neptune ASC at latitude 49.72°, 95.8 km north. This one is unusual because Sun and Neptune are already conjunct natally (0.98°); at this latitude they cross the horizon at exactly the same moment. So the natal blur between identity and imagination, which you carry everywhere, is sharpened onto the Ascendant here: how you show up and how you dissolve into the atmosphere arrive as one event. In this framework it doubles a tendency you already have, and it sits on the demanding side. It tends to reward work that is about atmosphere and image, and it tends to amplify the risk that the projection gets taken for the person.
Local space: Paris lies 9204.6 km northeast at bearing 40.53°, and no planetary line runs that way within 6°. Notice that this is almost exactly New York's bearing (39.69°). Paris sits on nearly the same ray out of Coyoacán, about 5834 km further along it, and nothing planetary lives on that ray.
What Paris asks: that you live from the 8th house, with your identity, your love and your faith all entangled in other people's resources and depths, while your Mars sits in the 2nd insisting on something that is only yours. Scorpio rising with its rulers in the 8th and the 2nd means everything tends to run through the question of what is mine and what is ours. That is not comfortable. It can be rich.
DETROIT, MICHIGAN, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
Detroit is the city that leaves the most of your birth chart standing. Sun, Mars, Jupiter and Pluto stay in their natal houses. No planet is within 8° of an angle. But the Moon comes close: at 29°42′ Taurus it sits about nine degrees from the relocated Midheaven at 8°38′ Gemini, just outside the window, and its MC line runs 694 km to the west, the nearest line Detroit has. At birth the Moon was 6.53° from the MC. Of the three cities, Detroit is the one that most nearly keeps your Moon at the top of the chart.
The relocated Ascendant is 11°59′ Virgo, the same sign as New York, so the same shift from Leo rising applies: attention and craft in front, presence a half-step behind. Mercury rules the relocated chart and moves from the 12th into the 11th, the thinking mind stepping out of retreat and into the network.
What is distinctive about Detroit is where the cusps fall. The data files Neptune at 12°24′ Cancer in the 10th and the Sun at 13°23′ Cancer in the 11th, which means the 11th-house cusp lands in the single degree between them. A conjunction under one degree does not split in practice; the honest reading is that Sun–Neptune sits on the 10th/11th cusp here, one foot in public role, one foot in community. The same thing happens on the opposite side of the chart: Uranus at 10°37′ Capricorn drops into the 4th while Mars at 13°24′ stays in the 5th, so Mars–Uranus straddles home and creativity. The Sun–Mars opposition, your chart's exact axis, lies right along those cusps. In this framework Detroit puts the chart's tightest tension on the borders between public and collective on one side and private and creative on the other, rather than committing it to either.
Venus moves from the 11th into the 10th and rejoins Pluto there, so Venus–Pluto is once again a 10th-house pair. But the Venus MC line is 1394 km east and the Pluto MC line 1369 km east, roughly twice the distance they are from New York. In Detroit this conjunction is in the house of reputation without being on the angle; the Moon is the planet closest to the top. That is the core difference between the two American cities in this model: Detroit tends to make what you are known for the Taurus Moon's material, steadiness, embodiment, appetite, patience, with the Saturn sextile behind it for staying power, whereas New York hands that spot to Venus–Pluto.
Saturn moves from the 8th into the 7th, partnership, but at roughly fifteen and a half degrees from the Descendant with its line 1521 km east, it is a house placement and nothing more. Jupiter stays in the 11th with the Node, so the faith-and-reach part of you stays in the circle of friends rather than moving into the public role as it does in New York. The Moon is filed in the 9th on paper, though at nine degrees from the MC it behaves more like a top-of-chart Moon than a 9th-house one.
Local space: Detroit lies 2972.9 km northeast at bearing 27.15°, a different ray out of Coyoacán from New York and Paris by about twelve and a half and thirteen and a half degrees respectively. No planetary line runs within 6° of it. The paran is the same one New York has, Mars rising × Jupiter setting at latitude 41.62°, but from Detroit it runs 79.2 km south rather than 100.8 km north; the line passes between the two cities, and Detroit is marginally the closer. The reading is the same: drive and generosity arriving in one moment, with the exact Sun–Mars opposition underneath.
What Detroit asks is the least structural change of the three. It asks you to hold the 10th/11th cusp, public role and community, without collapsing one into the other, and to let the Taurus Moon do the public-facing work while Venus–Pluto operates one row back. It is the place where the emphasis you were born with most survives the move.
THREE PLACES SIDE BY SIDE
New York and Detroit share a Virgo Ascendant, a Gemini Midheaven, a Mercury-ruled relocated chart with Mercury in the 11th, Saturn in the 7th, Uranus in the 4th, and the Mars ASC × Jupiter DSC paran running between them at latitude 41.62°. Where they diverge is in what stands at the top. New York raises Venus–Pluto to within 6.69° and 7.28° of the MC and moves the Sun, Neptune and Jupiter into the 10th with them; Detroit keeps the Sun and Jupiter in the 11th, leaves Venus–Pluto twice as far from the angle, and puts the Taurus Moon about nine degrees from the Midheaven. New York also drops Mars into the 4th; Detroit leaves it on the 4th/5th border. So in this model, New York foregrounds public intensity and a charged private life, while Detroit foregrounds a steadier public face with the chart's main tensions parked on the cusps.
Paris foregrounds something neither American city touches. Scorpio rising instead of Virgo, the rulers Pluto and Mars in the 8th and 2nd, five planets in the 8th house, the Moon in the 7th, Saturn in the 4th. Its emphasis is the merged life, shared resources, partnership, the private negotiation between mine and ours, rather than the public role. And it is the only city of the three with two parans inside one degree: Moon IC × Mercury DSC 64.4 km south and Sun ASC × Neptune ASC 95.8 km north.
By bearing from your birthplace, New York (39.69°) and Paris (40.53°) sit on almost the same line out of Coyoacán, 3370.1 km and 9204.6 km along it. Detroit sits on a different line at 27.15°. None of those three rays carries a planetary local space line, so this technique separates the places geographically without any of them landing on a planet.
None of this is a ranking. It is three different answers to the question "which parts of this chart get turned up here," and the answers are: public and private at once (New York); the shared and the entangled (Paris); the birth emphasis, largely intact (Detroit).
WHERE THE CHART ACTUALLY DRAWS LINES, AND WHERE IT DOES NOT
The chart genuinely distinguishes Paris from the two American cities. Different rising sign, different rulers, a different house for nearly every planet, no angular planets but two close parans: that is a real difference in kind, not a matter of a few kilometres.
Between New York and Detroit, the chart distinguishes less than a comparison might want it to, and I would rather say so than manufacture contrast. The angles are the same signs. The paran they share is not a separator; it runs between them and both are inside one degree of it, with a difference of about 21 km in distance to the line. What really separates them is the Midheaven: Venus–Pluto within the angular window in New York against a near-angular Moon in Detroit, plus the Sun and Jupiter changing house in one and not the other. Those are specific, but they are shifts of a few degrees, and a few degrees of house cusp is the kind of thing where the map is more precise than life.
Local space says nothing about any of the three. No planet's ray from Coyoacán runs toward New York, Paris or Detroit within 6°. That is a real finding: this technique, which is the one most able to tell nearby places apart, simply does not reach any of them.
And one thing the geometry cannot see: the birth chart itself. Sun opposite Mars to two arc-minutes, Venus fused with Pluto, Sun on Neptune, Mars on Uranus, the Cancer stellium against the Capricorn pair. Every city rehouses that structure; none of them dissolves it.
THE CHART IS ONE INPUT
Everything above describes emphasis, not outcome. It cannot tell you whether you would be lonely in Paris or overworked in New York or at ease in Detroit, because those depend on people, money, language, work, and the actual reason you are weighing these three cities against each other. Those reasons weigh more than the angles do, and they should.
What the relocated chart can offer is a set of honest questions to carry with you. In New York: am I willing to be that visible, and can I make a home that holds the restlessness? In Paris: do I want my center of gravity in what is shared, with my own resources the thing I have to fight for? In Detroit: is the version of me that already exists the one I want to keep amplifying? You are the one who can answer those, and you are the one who decides how much any of this counts.
