What Is My Sidereal Sign? Sidereal Zodiac Dates by Birthday

What is my sidereal sign? Look up your real sun sign by birthday in the full Lahiri sidereal zodiac dates table. 75% of people shift one sign back.

Your sun sign in sidereal astrology is probably different from what you have always been told. Because the sidereal zodiac is aligned to the actual constellations (not the seasons), the date ranges for each sign shift by about 24 days compared to tropical astrology.

Here is the complete sidereal sun sign table so you can look up your real sign.

Find your sign in 5 seconds: enter your birthday in the What's My Real Sign? calculator and skip the table. For your complete sidereal chart with all placements, use the sidereal birth chart calculator.

These dates can vary by a day depending on the year. For exact calculations, use a birth chart calculator with your specific birth date and time.

A note on methods: The table above uses the Lahiri ayanamsa — the equal-sign correction standard in Vedic astrology. Synthesis computes true sidereal instead: your Sun mapped to the actual IAU constellation boundaries, which are unequal in width and include Ophiuchus, putting today's offset near 31°. Your result in the free calculator may therefore differ from this table — the shift is not always exactly one sign back, and some birthdays land in Ophiuchus. How true sidereal works →

True Sidereal Zodiac Dates

The table above uses the equal-sign Lahiri method. Synthesis instead maps the Sun against unequal, constellation-based sign boundaries that include a 13th sign, Ophiuchus. These are the date ranges the Synthesis engine computes — the same frame your chart uses (boundaries drift about a day per 70 years of birth date, and the calculators check your exact birth moment):

True Sidereal SignSun Date Range
AriesApril 21 - May 11
TaurusMay 12 - June 18
GeminiJune 19 - July 19
CancerJuly 20 - August 6
LeoAugust 7 - September 14
VirgoSeptember 15 - November 4
LibraNovember 5 - November 22
ScorpioNovember 23 - December 6
OphiuchusDecember 7 - December 18
SagittariusDecember 19 - January 20
CapricornJanuary 21 - February 14
AquariusFebruary 15 - March 9
PiscesMarch 10 - April 20

These boundaries are defined by the International Astronomical Union's official constellation lines, so the signs are dramatically uneven — the Sun spends over six weeks in wide Virgo but only about a week in narrow Scorpius before crossing into Ophiuchus. Exact dates shift by roughly a day from year to year, and by up to a day either side depending on your birth time.

Note that these are not the same as the Lahiri/Vedic sidereal dates in the table above, which divide the sky into twelve equal 30° signs, and they are not the tropical dates you grew up with either. All three systems answer different questions. To resolve your exact placement — including whether you land in Ophiuchus — check your true sidereal sign with your full birth date and time.

Did Your Sign Change?

For roughly 75% of people, the sidereal sun sign is one sign back from the tropical sign. If you were born in the first three weeks of your tropical sign, your sidereal sign is almost certainly different.

Only if you were born in the last week of your tropical sign's date range does your sign stay the same in both systems.

Examples

  • Born March 25: Tropical Aries, Sidereal Pisces
  • Born April 18: Tropical Aries, Sidereal Aries (stays the same)
  • Born July 4: Tropical Cancer, Sidereal Gemini
  • Born December 20: Tropical Sagittarius, Sidereal Sagittarius (stays the same)
  • Born January 5: Tropical Capricorn, Sidereal Sagittarius

What It Means If Your Sign Changed

Having different tropical and sidereal sun signs is normal. Here is how to think about it:

Your tropical sign reflects your relationship with the seasonal cycle and your conscious personality - the self you identify with and project outward.

Your sidereal sign reflects your position in the cosmic star field and may describe a deeper, more instinctive layer of your identity - the qualities that emerge under pressure or in intimate settings.

Quick Guide to Each Shift

Tropical Aries to Sidereal Pisces: Your bold, action-oriented surface has a deeply intuitive, empathetic core. You charge forward, but your motivation often comes from compassion.

Tropical Taurus to Sidereal Aries: Your steady, grounded exterior hides a fierce, pioneering spirit. You value stability but need regular doses of excitement.

Tropical Gemini to Sidereal Taurus: Your quick, communicative nature is rooted in a deep desire for security and sensory experience. Words are your tool, but touch is your language.

Tropical Cancer to Sidereal Gemini: Your nurturing, emotional exterior runs on a curious, mentally active engine. You care deeply but process feelings through thinking.

Tropical Leo to Sidereal Cancer: Your confident, expressive persona protects a deeply sensitive emotional core. Your creativity is fueled by feeling.

Tropical Virgo to Sidereal Leo: Behind your analytical, service-oriented approach is a creative heart that wants recognition. You perfect things because you are proud of them.

Tropical Libra to Sidereal Virgo: Your diplomatic, partnership-focused nature is driven by a need to improve and refine. You seek harmony because imperfection bothers you deeply.

Tropical Scorpio to Sidereal Libra: Your intense, penetrating exterior is motivated by a deep need for balance and justice. You dig deep because you want fairness.

Tropical Sagittarius to Sidereal Scorpio: Your adventurous, philosophical surface runs on intense emotional fuel. You seek truth because you have felt the cost of lies.

Tropical Capricorn to Sidereal Sagittarius: Your disciplined, ambitious approach is driven by a genuine love of knowledge and meaning. You climb because you believe in something bigger.

Tropical Aquarius to Sidereal Capricorn: Your unconventional, forward-thinking persona is built on a surprisingly traditional foundation. You innovate from a place of structure.

Tropical Pisces to Sidereal Aquarius: Your dreamy, intuitive nature has a rational, humanitarian backbone. Your empathy is not just feeling - it is a philosophy.

Beyond the Sun Sign

Remember that your sun sign is just one piece of your chart. Your Moon, Rising, Mercury, Venus, and Mars signs all shift in sidereal too. The full picture of how your tropical and sidereal charts differ is much richer than the sun sign alone — and most people are surprised by how much further the changes go once they run their full sidereal birth chart.

What a Different Sun Sign Asks of You

If the table handed you a sign you did not expect, the useful response is not to swap one label for another — it is to hold the surprise as a question. A sidereal Sun that differs from the tropical one you have always claimed does not overwrite who you are; it offers a second description of the same self, measured against the stars instead of the seasons. The invitation is to notice which one you recognize. Maybe the tropical Leo you were told you are always felt slightly costume-like, and the sidereal Cancer underneath it names the part the confident story never captured. Or maybe both fit, in different rooms of your life. There is no obligation to pick. Finding a different sun sign is not a new verdict about your personality — it is permission to see yourself in more than one frame, and to keep whichever descriptions actually earn their place in your experience.

Questions to sit with

  • Which sign — tropical or sidereal — describes the self you recognize when no one is watching?
  • If your sign "changed," what did the old label get right, and what did it never quite explain?
  • Where might both signs be true at once, in different areas of your life?
  • Your Sun is one placement of many. Run your full chart at /chart to see where your Sun, Moon, and rising land in both systems — the mix says far more than any single sign.

Growing with Synthesis AI Chat

The Synthesis AI Chat reads your actual chart and remembers what you've discussed across conversations, so you can keep exploring a shifted sign over time instead of settling it in one sitting. You might ask:

  • "My tropical Sun is Leo but my sidereal Sun is Cancer — how do those two descriptions of me fit together?"
  • "Which of my placements stay the same across tropical and sidereal, and which ones shift?"
  • "If my sidereal Sun feels more accurate, what does that suggest about how I actually operate?"
  • "Where in my chart do the two systems most disagree, and what is that tension pointing at?"

Synthesis AI Chat is part of Synthesis AI Chat ($10/mo), and every $28 full reading includes a month of full access. Start a conversation at /chat, or see the options at /pricing.
