Esistono due modi di suddividere lo zodiaco, entrambi descrittivi di fenomeni reali. Lo zodiaco tropicale fissa 0° Ariete all’equinozio di primavera — il momento in cui il Sole attraversa l’equatore celeste verso nord. Segue il ciclo stagionale ed è usato dalla maggior parte degli astrologi occidentali.
Lo zodiaco siderale reale ancora ogni segno alla sua costellazione reale. Poiché l'asse terrestre oscilla molto lentamente (precessione degli equinozi), il punto zero stagionale e le stelle si sono allontanati — rispetto ai confini reali delle costellazioni, oggi il divario è di circa 31°.
