True Sidereal Astrology Explained: Read Your Real Chart

A true sidereal chart uses a star-referenced zodiac convention rather than the season-based tropical zodiac. The name does not specify one universal algorithm. To compare calculators, you need to know both their offset and their sign boundaries.

Synthesis uses a constellation-inspired model with 13 unequal longitude bands, including Ophiuchus. The model is reproducible, but it does not calculate the official two-dimensional IAU constellation boundaries. This guide describes the calculation used by the Synthesis sidereal birth chart calculator.

What Is True Sidereal Astrology?#

Tropical astrology divides longitude into twelve equal 30° signs starting at the March equinox. A sidereal convention shifts that reference using an offset, often called an ayanamsa. Equal-sign sidereal systems such as Lahiri retain twelve 30° signs. Synthesis also changes the sign divisions: it uses thirteen bands of different widths.

These conventions can produce different labels for the same astronomical position. A sidereal result is not a correction to your birth date, and a new sign does not replace your identity. Interpretations of signs are separate from the coordinate calculation.

How Synthesis Calculates a Sidereal Position#

The engine first calculates the tropical planetary longitude for your birth moment. It then uses:

offset = 31.38° + (birth year − 2000) / 72
sidereal longitude = (tropical longitude − offset) modulo 360°

For a birth in 2026 the offset is 31.7411°. For a birth in 1990 it is 31.2411°. The year is the birth year, not the year you open the calculator. Every planet in a chart receives the same angular offset.

The engine assigns the resulting longitude to these bands. The start is included and the end is excluded; 360° wraps to 0°.

The model uses longitude only. Official astronomical constellation regions are two-dimensional sky areas, so a longitude-band assignment is not proof of which official region contains a planet. The word “true” is the name of this astrological convention, not a claim of independently validated astronomical superiority.

True Sidereal vs Lahiri vs Tropical#

Lahiri and other ayanamsas use different reference definitions. Do not compare a Lahiri date table with Synthesis results and expect identical signs. For example, an April 18 birthday can remain Aries in Lahiri while falling in Pisces in the Synthesis model. Vedic astrology also includes interpretive techniques beyond the choice of zodiac; this calculator is not a complete Jyotish implementation.

Where Does Ophiuchus Fit In?#

Ophiuchus lies between Scorpio and Sagittarius in this model. Its band spans 12.3573°. The Sun is assigned to it approximately December 7–18 in 2026. This differs from dates quoted for other constellation conventions.

Scorpio spans 13.2273°, so describing the Synthesis Scorpio season as just one week is incorrect. Virgo spans 49.7135°, much wider than an equal 30° sign. A Worked Example#

Take a hypothetical 2026 chart and subtract 31.7411° from each tropical longitude:

Every row moves by the same angle. The resulting signs differ because the band widths differ. Degrees shown within a Synthesis sign are measured from the start of that band; in a wide band they can exceed 30°.

How to Read Your Sidereal Chart#

Start with the Sun, Moon and Ascendant, then compare the remaining planets with their tropical labels. Note both agreements and differences without assuming that every placement moves back one sign. Your Moon may change signs during the day, while the Ascendant depends strongly on birth time and place.

If your birth time is unknown, the calculator uses noon for planetary positions and does not present an Ascendant. Treat the Moon as provisional near a boundary. An exact birth time is required for a rising-sign result.

The sign system and house system are different choices. Do not assume that thirteen unequal signs imply thirteen houses or that every sidereal calculator uses whole-sign houses. When comparing full charts, check the house convention separately.

Astrological interpretations can be prompts for reflection, but the coordinate calculation itself does not validate personality or prediction claims. You can compare interpretations while keeping that distinction clear.
