Sidereal Astrology
Your real zodiac sign — measured against the stars, not the seasons.
The sidereal zodiac anchors to the actual constellations in the sky. For roughly 75% of people, the sidereal sun sign is one sign back from the tropical sign. This page is the hub for everything Synthesis publishes on sidereal astrology.

There are two ways to divide the zodiac, and both describe real things. The tropical zodiac anchors 0° Aries to the spring equinox — the moment the Sun crosses the celestial equator heading north. It tracks the seasonal cycle and is what most Western astrologers use.
The sidereal zodiac anchors 0° Aries to the fixed stars of the constellation Aries. Because Earth's axis wobbles very slowly (precession of the equinoxes), the seasonal zero point and the stellar zero point have drifted apart by about 24° over the last 2,000 years. That is the gap between the two zodiacs today.
Both frameworks describe real patterns. Tropical astrology describes your relationship to the seasonal cycle. Sidereal describes your relationship to the fixed stars. They answer different questions about the same person.

Frequently Asked
What is sidereal astrology?
Sidereal astrology anchors the zodiac to the actual constellations in the sky. It accounts for the precession of the equinoxes — the slow wobble of Earth's axis that shifts the seasonal markers against the background stars by about 1° every 72 years. The current gap between tropical and sidereal zodiacs is roughly 24°.
How is sidereal astrology different from tropical?
Tropical astrology anchors 0° Aries to the spring equinox, so the zodiac tracks the seasonal cycle. Sidereal astrology anchors 0° Aries to the fixed star position of Aries, so the zodiac tracks the actual constellations. For most people, this means the sidereal sun sign is one sign back from the tropical sign.
Which zodiac is correct — sidereal or tropical?
Both are internally consistent. They measure different things. Tropical describes your relationship to the seasonal cycle on Earth; sidereal describes your relationship to the fixed stars in the sky. Most Western astrologers use tropical. Vedic astrology uses sidereal. Neither is more accurate than the other — they answer different questions.
What is true sidereal astrology?
True sidereal uses the actual constellation boundaries as defined by the International Astronomical Union (IAU), including the thirteenth constellation Ophiuchus. It is more astronomically literal than Lahiri sidereal but less widely used. Lahiri remains the standard for Vedic astrology.
Will my personality change if I use sidereal?
No — your personality is the same. Both the sidereal and tropical signs describe real patterns in your chart. Most people recognize themselves in both readings. The sidereal sign often points to a more grounded or essential expression of the same archetype.
How do I find my sidereal sign?
